Fruity Peppernuts (Pfeffernüsse)

What You Need

1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cups shortening
2 eggs
1/2 cups chopped dates
4 teaspoons buttermilk
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup finely chopped pecans
1 cup coconut flakes

Here's How

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs and beat well. Add dates and buttermilk, then dry ingredients. Stir in the nuts and coconut. Take a small amount of dough, about the size of a golf ball, and roll it into a thin roll, (about the thickness of your little finger) like a "snake" on a floured breadboard. Cut the "snake" into very small pieces with scissors, allowing the cookies to drop on a greased cookie sheet. Arrange them so that they are not too close. You can put one sheet in the oven, and start another one. Bake about 8 to 10 minutes at 350 degrees until they are golden brown.

Note: After the cookies are baked, they will be about the size of a dime in diameter.
